Obbichterweg in Born (NL)

Project: Expansion of the Julianakanaal

Objective:

  • The Julianakanaal is part of the Maasroute, a vital shipping route connecting ports in Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands.
  • The Maasroute is being upgraded to accommodate two-barge push-tows (Class Vb vessels), which are 190 meters long, 11.4 meters wide, and have a maximum draft of 3.5 meters.
  • To facilitate this, the Julianakanaal needs to be widened and deepened.

Temporary bridge to minimize traffic disruption:
Adjacent to the construction site is the Obbichterweg, a key road connecting nearby villages, frequently used by local residents. To avoid long-term road closures, a temporary transport bridge is being installed to handle construction traffic. This ensures that the Obbichterweg remains largely open during the majority of the construction work.

Space for two-way traffic:
The temporary bridge is supported by pile foundations securely anchored into the ground. With a total length of 48 meters and a width of 11 meters, the bridge provides ample capacity for two vehicles to travel in both directions simultaneously. This allows for efficient transport of construction materials to the Julianakanaal and removal of materials to the depot.

Janson Bridging designed and installed a JSB-1 transport bridge, measuring 2x24 meters in length and 10.5 meters in width, suitable for heavy construction traffic.
